Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers! HOORAY.

This is Andy Reiner's band (of the famous Reiner Family Band). They are very deserving and will put on a great performance, I am sure.

Congratulations!

Postby fil » Sun Jul 13, 2008 6:00 pm

Hi all,

I do a weekly music "radio" show on the web called "FiL With Sound". This coming Tuesday, (July 15), I'll be featuring songs from all the acts appearing on the Emerging Artists Showcase at Falcon Ridge.

This is a great way to get in the Falcon Ridge mood! Tune in on Tuesday from 5-7 pm ET at http://HearNewBrunswick.com.

Emerging Artists?

Postby martin52 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 4:20 pm

Not to diss any of the "Emerging Artists" ( this is one of my favorite events of the festival) but it seems that almost every year there are Emerging Artists who have "Emerged" before. I really think given the amount of talent out there and the limited number of slots, a performer should only get one Emerging Artist appearance at FR. They shouldn't be allowed to come back after two years....

My other issue is: if they are a solo performer, they perform alone- no back up singers or other players - just the performer - solo.

some "solo" performers who were in the showcase last year, often perform with accompaniment - for example, nich annis and elizabeth crisfield (she backs up on his CDs, too), and joe jecks and helena nash (and sometimes karen bergman on cello). if the performer performs often with someone else, it is quite legit to go up on the stage with that person .

as for "emerging," sometimes i wonder what the term means. i have seen perormers who were once on the mainstage (kate mcdonnel when she was mcdonnel and tane years ago), edie carey as part of NY Live. i have also seen performers with more than 10 CDs.

I just think the playing field should be level. My feeling is that if you allow accompaniment, the "solo" performer is at a distinct disadvantage. If the artist performs regularly with another person they should enter as a duo.

I know we are all supposed to be really focusing on the song and the individual performance, but additional instrumentation or backing vocals can make up for a lack of musicianship or lesser quality writing. I play solo gigs and I am reasonably competent and I do okay. But when I have a lead guitarist and a bass player or cello player with me, it is a completely different experience for the listener and I would say that they probably come away thinking I am better/the songs are better than if I was solo.

As an audience member, I would want to be presented with the best presentation that the performer[s] could assemble. If I ever got up on that stage you could bet that I would make my presentation the absolute best that I could present.

I don't see any problem with this.

so if someone plays regularly with a partner, and submits songs with that partner, he or she cannot bring the partner on stage?

i agree that a trio has an advantage over a solo performer - more sound, more memorable. but girlyman, we're about 9, red molly are all trios - and the rules allow for them to be considered an "emerging artist." the competiton is not a "solo performer emerging artist" competition.

Yep, limiting a performance to a single performer is adding rules where rules do not need to be added. This reminds me of another thread where we should be baning acts that are not pure folk acts.

Folk music comes in many different forms, and it is all good for folks, somehow, some way.
