FRFF2009- a response to Anne and support for FRFF

Postby pat » Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:03 pm

Anne-
if the FRFF situation for next year is that precarious- then prior to the possibility of raising ticket prices- or more drastic measures-and after attending for 12 years NOT having a FRFF is unthinkable- maybe a FRFF tornado fund could be set up to accept donations from those that are willing and can afford it. While everything is fresh in our minds and we haven’t lost the FRFF “state of mind”. Maybe using paypal as well as sending it in. The FRFF community is the friendliest, honest, helpful, and many more words that I cannot think of. The help and cooperation on Sunday, as well as many other times over the years proved this. I would think that the people that can would RISE to help the FRFF community continue.
Just a request- what do the rest think?
Thanks
Pat

I agree. I think that the tornado really showed what this community is made of and how willing everyone is to band together to help things along.

I'm glad someone suggested it, I was just thinking that I'd be happy to donate some money if there was a fund set up for it. That said, I also know that there's a lot of organization that needs to go into something like that and considering all the chaos the people we turn to for that sort of thing are already in, it may just be One More Thing to deal with.

But, I agree completely with the concept!

Me too!

As a Boston-area amateur producer I would be willing to host a benefit concert.

This community is the best

Postby AnneS » Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:12 pm

I've had lots of other jobs and a whole other career for many years in biological research before this, but the ppl I work with and FOR now, as in all of you, are just the best in every way.

I am researching this idea right away, the fest has a PayPal account already. I pretty much FORGOT about it entirely. That was our first method for doing online tix sales way back when and we still have the account. More info ASAP, thanks all of you, Anne

Also agree, just need to know where/when to send contributions. There are so many of us...

Perhaps there is a lawyer or accountant in the community who would be able to do the administrative work pro bono?

Would also like to know if there's anything else we could do to help out?

Benefit CD

Postby shakenbysound » Wed Jul 30, 2008 7:53 pm

Anne - What about the idea of a benefit CD instead of/as well as the benefit concert? Maybe a CD OF the concert! Maybe Dave Chafant could produce...

When we get a donation site up, I'll set up a a linkable FRFF graphic to be freely distributed to anyone who would be so kind as to post it on fan sites, commercial sites, radio sites and folk/music sites in general .... that is unless there's an objection?

perhaps a benefit would really work to raise some funds. a lot of performers are truly committed to FR and have benefited from FR, and a one day mini-FR at an outdoor venue would be heavily attended.

I'm wondering what the economics of FRFF are. As far as I know it's a for-profit operation and it feels a little funny asking people to donate and do benefits without knowing how the money flows. I assume it normally brings in enough to support the director and pay all the myriads of people who need to be paid for time and equipment and space and such. Is it usually profitable? Does it make sense for it to run as a for-profit vs a non-profit?

(I know it's a HUGE amount of work and I am very appreciative of that, don't get me wrong! I am sure it is a labor of love!)

Of course since it *is* a private operation nobody has to reveal any numbers but it might make it easier to raise money.

We could probably pay a bit more for tickets myself, but not too much more, especially with food prices high (I've heard that we've lost vendors because the FF cut is high, but I don't know any numbers). I would suppose that the bad weather and high gas prices cut into the revenue this year even before the storm wiped out Sunday afternoon.

We'd definitely come to any sort of benefit in the Greater Boston area and buy t-shirts or CD's or whatever, and we're holding on to our spare bucks for next year.

PS we might also pay more to camp a day earlier, if that's an option.

I would guess that event insurance of some sort goes without saying. What-all it covered, tho...that is the question.

"I survived" tshirts to raise money?

Postby amp » Wed Jul 30, 2008 11:40 pm

I was going to suggest that Anne actually consider the “I survived” shirt mentioned on another thread for sales to help with the financial hit that must have happened but hung off when I saw donations were being offered. Now that the profit/non profit worry has been raised I’ll mention what I was thinking so you all can tear it apart (not meant to be a bad thing, groups usually polish ideas).

I was envisioning the bird with an inside out umbrella… maybe an icepack on its beak or hailstones at its feet with “Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 2008” on the front. I was thinking verbiage on the back could be something like:

I SURVIVED FRFF 2008
Torrential Rains!
70 MPH Winds!
Golf Sized Hail!
Who says festival attendance isn’t an extreme sport??!!

(and YES I will attend FRFF next year!)

My thought was that it could be pre-sold on the list, or to the either the list of folks who ordered tickets or get the flyer. Pre-selling should enable buying just what’s wanted – no extra stock. This might be more effort or cost than it’s worth, but wanted to toss the idea out.

I would be willing and happy to help with this. I'm no artist, but i could take orders or whatever remote task[s] need doing. Or i could go to wherever the shirts are and help pack and mail.

A benefit concert would be a great idea I'd go. Survived 2008 t shirts, Buttons, or posters would be another option. Of course from Anne's post it sounds like planning something would be impossible at this time.
I felt bad about not being able to help with the cleanup after the storm. I had to be back at work and could not stay. But I would happily donate to a fund to help ensure the festival returns in 2009
I have volunteered for several years at FRFF and get as much back as I give so again I would happily donate to help the festival,
